Low Water
Pressure Croydon
Water pressure low at the kitchen tap? Shower pressure low upstairs? Hot water coming through weak while the cold feels normal?
We help homeowners and landlords across Croydon find the reason for low water pressure before parts get changed for no reason. Sometimes it is a simple stopcock issue. Sometimes it is limescale, a blocked tap, a hidden leak, a shower valve problem, or the boiler side of the system.
Open daily from 8am until 2am. Call MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD, explain what has changed, and we will tell you the sensible next step.
Pressure problems need proper checking
A shower head for low water pressure might make the spray feel better, but it will not fix a restricted pipe, closed valve, combi boiler fault, blocked aerator, or a supply issue from the street. We check the simple things first, then work inwards.

Why is my water pressure low?
Low water pressure in a house normally starts with one question: is it the whole property, only one outlet, only hot water, or only the shower?
If the pressure is low everywhere, we look at the internal stop valve, outside supply, Thames Water low pressure reports, shared supply pipes, and possible leaks. If it is just one tap or one shower head, the issue is usually more local. Limescale in the aerator, debris in a filter, a stiff isolation valve, or a tired mixer cartridge can all make the water feel weak.
In Croydon you get a bit of everything. Older terraces around Thornton Heath and Norbury can have older pipework and shared supplies. Flats near East Croydon sometimes have booster sets, tanks, or awkward access cupboards. In South Croydon and Addiscombe, we often see pressure complaints after bathroom changes, tap replacements, or boiler work where a valve has not been opened fully afterwards.
So no, low pressure water is not always a big job. But it does need to be separated properly. Mains supply issue, internal plumbing issue, hot water issue, boiler issue. Different fixes.
Low hot water pressure is different from low cold pressure
When the cold kitchen tap is strong but the hot water pressure is low, the problem is usually inside the property. That could be a combi boiler restriction, hot water pipework, a cylinder issue, a mixer tap, a shower valve, or a partially closed valve.
People sometimes search hot water heater low pressure or low water pressure water heater. In UK homes around Croydon, that could mean a combi boiler, an unvented cylinder, an older gravity system, or a stored hot water setup. The fix depends on what is actually installed.
If your boiler pressure gauge is normal but your radiators are heating and your hot taps are still running cold, the issue may not be low water pressure at all. Our No Hot Water But Heating guide explains the most common causes. If the boiler is showing a fault, leaking or refusing to work properly, it is more likely to need boiler repairs than general plumbing work.
When we would treat it as urgent
Low water pressure by itself is not always an emergency. A weak shower can usually wait. A tap that has slowly got worse over months is annoying, but not usually dangerous.
Different story if the pressure suddenly drops, you have no water at all, you can hear water running behind a wall, the ceiling is damp, or the boiler pressure keeps falling after being topped up. Then you want it checked sooner, because a hidden leak can damage floors, ceilings, units and electrics.
For sudden leaks, burst pipes, or water coming through a ceiling, go straight to our Emergency Plumber Croydon page. If you have a suspected leak but it is contained, our Leaking Pipe Repairs Croydon page is the better fit.
What low water pressure usually points to
This is the rough order we think through on site. Not every property follows the same pattern, but it stops the job turning into guesswork.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Low water pressure in house, both hot and cold | Stopcock not fully open, mains supply issue, shared pipe problem, leak, or pressure reduction in the area. | Check neighbours and Thames Water low water pressure updates. If only your home is affected, call a plumber. |
| Low pressure in the shower only | Blocked shower head, limescale, mixer valve fault, filter blockage, or flow restriction. | Clean the shower head first. If the shower pressure low problem stays, the valve or pipework may need checking. |
| Water pressure low in shower head but taps are fine | The shower head, hose, cartridge, or filter is usually the weak point. | A low water pressure shower head can help comfort, but only after the restriction is ruled out. |
| Low hot water pressure but cold water is normal | Combi boiler, cylinder, hot pipe restriction, hot isolation valve, or tap/shower mixer issue. | Check more than one hot outlet. If all hot outlets are weak, it needs proper diagnosis. |
| Pressure is low on the boiler gauge | Heating system pressure loss, radiator leak, expansion vessel issue, pressure relief valve, or hidden pipe leak. | Use our boiler pressure dropping overnight guide or book a boiler check. |
| Sink pressure is poor or water drains badly | Tap filter blockage, isolation valve issue, or a separate drainage problem if the sink is slow to empty. | If the sink is blocked rather than low pressure, see Blocked Sink Croydon. |
Low water pressure in my area, or just my property?
This is where a lot of people waste time. If your neighbours have the same issue, the cause may be outside your home. Roadworks, burst mains, planned works, high demand, or pressure management can all make water pressure low in my area searches spike for a short while.
In London, Thames Water low pressure checks are worth doing when the cold kitchen tap suddenly drops. If they are already working nearby, there may not be much a plumber can fix inside your home until the supply settles.
But if next door is fine and your pressure is low, that changes things. We would look at your stopcock, internal pipework, taps, valves, possible leaks, loft tanks if present, booster pumps where fitted, and the hot water setup. Flats and conversions around West Croydon and East Croydon can be awkward because supply arrangements are not always obvious.
A quick real-world example
A customer in a converted property near Selhurst had low pressure on hot water only. The first thought was the boiler. Fair guess. But the cold was strong, the boiler was firing, and only the bathroom hot outlets were weak.
Turned out a valve under boxing had been left half closed after other work. Five-minute fix once it was found. That is why we do not like jumping straight to “new boiler” or “new shower” without checking the boring stuff first.
Showers, shower heads and pressure
A better shower head can improve the feel of weak pressure. It does not create proper mains pressure where the system cannot supply it.
If the old head is scaled up, too wide, or partly blocked, a shower head for low pressure water can make the spray feel sharper.
If the restriction is in the mixer valve, pipework, boiler, cylinder, pump, or mains supply, even the best shower head for low water pressure will not solve it properly.
Flow at other outlets, hot versus cold, filters, isolation valves, shower valve behaviour, and whether the pressure drop is new or has always been there.
Not sure if it is plumbing, boiler or Thames Water?
Call and explain what is happening: which taps are weak, whether hot or cold is affected, and whether neighbours have the same issue. We will point you in the right direction before booking anything unnecessary.
Boiler pressure and water pressure are easy to mix up
If you have an Ideal boiler low water pressure warning, or the pressure gauge on a Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal or Baxi boiler is sitting too low, that is usually heating system pressure. It is not always the same as poor pressure from your taps.
Low water pressure boiler searches often come from people seeing a fault code or a gauge under 1 bar. That can happen after bleeding radiators, from a small leak on the heating circuit, a faulty expansion vessel, or pressure relief valve discharge. If radiators are not heating properly too, a power flush may be relevant in some systems, but not every pressure problem needs one.
If the boiler is old, repeatedly losing pressure, leaking, noisy, and giving hot water trouble, we can also advise whether repair is still sensible or whether boiler installation is worth considering. No pressure selling. Just the honest route.
Low water pressure FAQs
Why is my water pressure low?
Low water pressure is usually caused by a partly closed stop valve, blocked tap aerator, limescale, a faulty shower valve, hidden leak, shared supply issue, or a water supplier problem. First check whether it affects every tap or only one outlet.
What should I do if I have low water pressure in my house?
Check the cold kitchen tap, make sure the internal stopcock is open, ask a neighbour if their pressure is low too, and look for signs of leaks. If only your house is affected, it is more likely to be an internal plumbing issue.
Is low water pressure in my area a Thames Water issue?
It can be. If several homes nearby have low pressure or no water, check Thames Water low pressure updates for your area. If neighbours are fine and only your property has the problem, a plumber should check the internal supply and pipework.
Why is my hot water pressure low but cold water is fine?
Low hot water pressure normally points to something inside the property. It could be a combi boiler issue, cylinder issue, hot pipe restriction, valve problem, or mixer tap/shower valve fault. Testing more than one hot outlet helps narrow it down.
Can low water pressure be caused by a boiler?
Yes, but only in certain cases. A combi boiler can affect hot water flow and pressure, while low pressure on the boiler gauge usually relates to the sealed heating system. If the pressure is low on the boiler gauge, see our boiler losing pressure page.
What does Ideal boiler low water pressure mean?
On an Ideal boiler, low pressure usually means the heating system pressure has dropped below the correct level. It may need topping up, but if it keeps dropping there may be a leak, expansion vessel problem, or pressure relief valve issue.
Why is my shower pressure low?
Low water pressure in shower outlets can be caused by a scaled shower head, blocked hose, mixer valve fault, filter blockage, weak hot supply, or poor mains pressure. If the water pressure is low in the shower head only, clean or replace the head first.
Will a low water pressure shower head fix it?
A low water pressure shower head can improve the spray pattern, especially if your old head is blocked with limescale. It will not fix a pipe restriction, closed valve, combi boiler problem, poor mains supply, or faulty shower valve.
Is low water pressure an emergency?
Usually no. But if pressure suddenly drops with signs of a leak, water stains, damp patches, no water at all, or boiler pressure dropping repeatedly, it should be checked quickly. For active leaks, use our emergency plumber service.
Do you cover low water pressure problems across Croydon?
