Why is my radiator leaking?
Most home radiator leaks come from one of four places: the valve, the pipe joint, the bleed valve, or the radiator body.
If the leak is around the radiator valve, it may be a loose nut, worn seal, old thermostatic radiator valve, or a valve spindle letting water through. If the leak is coming from the side or bottom of the radiator panel, that can mean corrosion. Brown or rusty water is normally a bad sign.
In older Croydon homes, especially terraces and converted flats around Thornton Heath, Norbury and Selhurst, we see plenty of radiators that have been painted over, boxed in, or left for years with small signs of rust around the bottom seam. The first leak can look tiny. Then winter comes, the heating runs harder, and the drip gets worse.

How to stop a radiator leak at home
This is the sensible order. Not every leak can be fixed safely at home, but these checks can help you reduce damage and understand what is going on.
1. Turn the heating off
Let the radiator cool before wiping, tightening or checking anything. Hot radiator water can burn. Also, when the heating is running, small leaks can spread and make it harder to see the true source.
2. Dry the radiator and pipework
Use a towel and dry around the valve, bleed screw, pipe joint and bottom of the radiator. Then watch where the first new drop appears. This matters because the water often runs along the pipe before dripping somewhere else.
3. Check whether it is the valve, joint or radiator body
A leaking radiator valve may need tightening or replacement. A leak from the radiator body usually means corrosion or a pinhole. That is normally not a proper repair job. It often means the radiator needs replacing.
4. Isolate the radiator if you can
If you know what you are doing, close the radiator valves on both sides. Turn the thermostatic radiator valve down and close the lockshield valve. Count the turns on the lockshield so it can be reopened to the same position later.
5. Call if it keeps leaking or pressure keeps dropping
If the leak is not stopping, the floor is getting wet, the radiator body is rusty, or the boiler pressure is falling, it is time to get it checked properly. A small leak can still damage flooring, skirting and ceilings.

Sometimes a gentle tighten is enough. Sometimes the valve packing has failed. Sometimes the valve has seized and needs replacing. It depends where the water is coming from. The annoying bit is that a drip from the spindle can look like a pipe joint leak once it runs down the valve body.
If the valve is old, stiff, green around the nut, or dripping every time the heating warms up, replacement is usually cleaner than messing about with a temporary fix. A new TRV can also help control the room better, but only if the heating system itself is in decent condition.
If several radiators are cold, noisy, rusty, or full of sludge, the issue may sit wider than one valve. In that case a heating check or power flush conversation may be relevant, especially where corrosion is showing up in more than one place.

Can radiators leak gas?
Normal central heating radiators do not leak gas. They carry heating water. So if your radiator is dripping, it is normally water from the heating circuit.
Gas is connected to the boiler, cooker, gas fire or other gas appliances, not the radiator panels around the house. That said, if you ever smell gas, do not treat it as a radiator problem. Turn off the gas at the meter if safe, avoid switches and flames, open windows, and call the National Gas Emergency number.

How much to fix a radiator leak?
The cost depends on what has failed. A simple valve adjustment is different from replacing a TRV. A leaking pipe joint is different from a corroded radiator body. If the radiator panel itself has rusted through, repair is usually false economy.
There is also the system side. If one radiator has rusted through because the heating water is dirty, other radiators may not be far behind. That is where we look at the condition of the heating water, radiator age, boiler pressure history and whether the system has inhibitor in it.
If the radiator leak is part of a bigger heating issue, we may suggest checking the boiler, radiators and system water together. If the boiler is old, leaking, noisy, losing pressure and struggling with hot water, then boiler installation may be worth discussing. But a single valve leak does not mean you need a new boiler. A radiator leak can lower pressure on a combi boiler or sealed heating system. If topping up only lasts a day or two, there is usually a leak or pressure issue somewhere.

How do you fix a radiator leak?
