Outside Tap Installation Croydon
Need an outside tap fitted for the garden, hosepipe, patio, bins, car washing or outdoor cleaning? MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD installs outside taps, garden taps and outdoor bib taps across Croydon and South London.
We fit the tap properly, run the pipework neatly, add isolation where practical, check the backflow protection, test the water pressure and make sure the wall is sealed after drilling. If the outside tap has good pressure but your radiators are heating and your indoor hot taps stay cold, the problem is likely elsewhere. Our No Hot Water But Heating guide explains the most common causes. Small job, yes. But when an outside tap is rushed, it can also leave a leak inside a kitchen cupboard or behind a unit.
This page sits inside our Plumbers Croydon cluster, but it has its own job to do: outside tap fitting, outside tap replacement and garden tap advice. No need to mix it up with boiler repairs.

Fitting an outside tap sounds simple. Sometimes it is.
Most outside tap installations are fed from the cold mains pipe inside the property, often near the kitchen sink, utility room or downstairs toilet. The pipework then passes through the external wall and connects to a hose union bib tap outside.
That is the basic version. In real homes around Croydon, it is not always that clean. You get kitchen units in the way, awkward stopcocks, old pipework, tiled walls, boxed-in pipes, weak water pressure, or a previous outdoor tap kit that was never fitted properly.
We look at the pipework first before drilling. That matters. A garden tap is only useful if it is secure, isolated properly and not slowly leaking where nobody can see it.

What we usually fit
An outside tap should not just be screwed onto a bit of pipe and left. A proper installation depends on the property, but these are the parts we normally check or fit where needed.
| Part | Why it matters | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor bib tap | The actual garden tap used for hosepipes, watering and cleaning. | Secure fixing, clean thread, no dripping from the spout or gland nut. |
| Wall plate / backplate | Holds the tap firmly to the wall. | No movement when the hose is pulled, no twisting pipework behind it. |
| Cold water feed | Supplies the outside tap from the internal pipework. | Correct route, suitable pressure and no stress on old fittings. |
| Isolation valve | Lets you turn the outside tap off separately. | Useful in winter and useful if the tap ever needs replacing later. |
| Double check valve | Helps protect the mains water from backflow when a hose is connected. | Especially important where hosepipes, spray guns or outdoor connectors are used. |
| Pipe sealing and clips | Stops movement, draughts and water getting into the wall. | Clean finish outside, supported pipework inside. |
Already got an outside tap but it drips?
If the tap is leaking from the spout, it may only need a washer or replacement tap head. If it leaks from the wall, backplate or pipework inside, it needs checking properly. For internal pipe leaks, see our leaking pipe repairs in Croydon page.
Can you install an outside tap yourself?
Some people can, yes. If you are confident with pipework, isolation valves, drilling through external walls, sealing and backflow protection, it can be done.
Where it goes wrong is usually not the tap itself. It is the hidden bit. A small weep under the sink. A pipe that was pushed too hard. A tap fitted without proper support, then the hose gets pulled and the backplate moves.
If you are unsure, it is normally cheaper to get it fitted properly once than repair water damage afterwards.
Our outside tap fitting process
- We check the best position. Usually near the kitchen, utility room or downstairs pipework.
- We isolate the water. The stopcock and existing pipework are checked before anything is cut.
- We run the cold feed. Pipework is routed as neatly as the property allows.
- We fit isolation and backflow protection where needed. This makes the tap safer and easier to maintain.
- We fix the outdoor tap securely. The tap should not wobble when a hose is attached.
- We test it properly. Water on, pressure checked, joints checked, outside wall checked, inside cupboard checked.
Outside tap jobs around Croydon are rarely identical
In newer homes, the pipe route can be straightforward. In older terraces around Thornton Heath, Norbury and parts of Croydon, the stopcock might be awkward, the pipework might have been altered a few times, and the kitchen layout can make access tight.
Flats and maisonettes are different again. You may not have a simple external wall near the sink. Sometimes the better answer is not “fit it here”, it is “do not fit it there because it will be a pain later”.
That is the bit people miss with outdoor tap kits. They make the job look like a quick box from a shop. In the real world, the neatness of the pipe route and the quality of the connection matter more than the tap itself.
Common outside tap problems we see
| Problem | Likely issue | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Outside tap dripping constantly | Worn washer, damaged tap body or loose gland nut. | Repair may be possible, but replacement is often cleaner if the tap is old. |
| Tap moves when the hose is pulled | Loose wall plate or poorly supported pipework. | Needs securing before it stresses the pipe behind the wall. |
| No water from the garden tap | Isolation valve off, blockage, frozen pipe or poor supply. | Check isolation first. If internal taps are also weak, see low water pressure. |
| Leak inside cupboard after using hose | Joint under pressure or pipework disturbed. | Turn off the isolation valve or stopcock and book a plumber. |
| Tap freezes in winter | Exposed pipework or water left sitting in the outside section. | Use isolation, drain down where possible and fit a proper cover. |
A quick real-world example
One job we see a lot is the “it only leaks when I use the hose” problem. The tap outside looks fine. Then the customer turns the hose on, pressure builds, and water starts appearing under the kitchen sink.
Usually the outside fitting has been connected to internal pipework without enough support, or the pipe has been pulled slightly every time the hose is used. It is not dramatic at first. Just a wet patch. Then it gets worse.
That is why we test inside and outside before leaving. Not just a quick twist of the tap and done.

Outside tap installation FAQs
How much does it cost to install an outside tap?
The cost depends on access, where the cold pipework is, how far the tap is from the supply and whether extra pipework or isolation is needed. A simple tap near a kitchen sink is usually more straightforward than a long pipe run through awkward cupboards or walls.
Can an outside tap be fitted from the kitchen sink pipework?
Often, yes. Many outside taps are fed from the cold mains pipework under or near the kitchen sink. We still need to check access, pipe condition and where the tap will sit outside before confirming the best route.
Do I need a double check valve on an outside tap?
For outside taps used with hosepipes, backflow protection is important because water can be drawn back from a hose or outdoor fitting. We check the setup and fit suitable protection where needed.
Can you replace an old garden tap?
Yes. If the existing backplate and pipework are sound, we may be able to replace just the outside bib tap. If the backplate moves, leaks or the pipework is poor, it is better to repair that properly at the same time.
Can outside taps freeze?
Yes. Outside taps can freeze during cold weather, especially if water is left sitting in the exposed pipework. We recommend using the internal isolation valve in winter where fitted, draining the tap if possible and using an insulated outside tap cover.
Can you fit a hot outside tap or outdoor mixer tap?
Sometimes, but it depends on the pipework, distance from the hot supply and how the tap will be used. A standard cold outside tap is enough for most gardens. Outdoor mixer taps need more thought around pipe routing, insulation and safe installation.
Is this the same as kitchen tap replacement?
No. Kitchen tap replacement is internal tap work around the sink, flexible hoses and kitchen fittings. If that is the job you need, see our kitchen tap replacement page instead.
