Blocked Toilet Croydon

Toilet blocked, water rising in the bowl, weak flush, or the pan not clearing properly? MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD helps with blocked toilets, toilet unblocking, toilet auger work and plumbing problems across Croydon.

Some toilet blockages are simple. Others keep coming back because the problem is deeper in the waste run, the flush is weak, or the toilet has been fitted badly. The first job is working out which one you are dealing with.

First thing: stop flushing it.

If the bowl is already full, another flush can push water over the rim. It sounds basic, but a lot of toilet floods start with one extra flush when the pan is already struggling.

Let the water settle. If the cistern is still running or the toilet is overflowing, turn the water off at the isolation valve if you can reach it. If water is actively rising or spilling over, see our overflowing toilet Croydon guidance.

Avoid pouring more unblocker chemicals into the bowl if a plumber may need to work on it. Chemicals sitting in the pan can splash back when plunging or using a toilet auger.

How to unblock a toilet before calling

If it is a light blockage, you may be able to clear it yourself. The key is not to keep forcing the toilet once the water starts rising.

  • Stop flushing once the toilet water starts rising.
  • Wait for the water level to drop before trying anything else.
  • Use a proper toilet plunger with a flange, not a flat sink plunger.
  • Start with slow pressure first, then firmer plunges once you have a seal.
  • If using a toilet auger, feed it gently and do not force it.
  • Call a plumber if the toilet clears but keeps blocking again.

When to stop trying

Stop if the bowl is close to overflowing, waste is coming back up, the blockage feels solid, or more than one waste fixture is affected.

If the toilet and a nearby sink are both draining badly, the problem may sit further along the waste run. Our blocked sink Croydon page explains the sink side of that problem.

What usually causes a blocked toilet?

The fix depends on where the blockage is. A plunger can clear a simple pan blockage. It will not solve a toilet that keeps blocking because of a weak flush, older pipework, poor installation or a deeper waste problem.

Likely cause What you may notice Best next step
Paper or wipes in the toilet bend The bowl fills, then slowly drops after a while. A proper toilet plunger or toilet auger may clear it.
Object dropped into the toilet The toilet blocks suddenly and plunging feels like it hits something. Stop forcing it. The pan may need careful clearing.
Weak flush or cistern fault The toilet blocks even with normal use and not much paper. Check the cistern, flush valve, fill valve and water level.
Scale or older waste pipework Slow flush, regular toilet blocks, sometimes gurgling. Clear the blockage, then check why it keeps happening.
Drain or soil-pipe issue Other fixtures drain slowly or waste backs up elsewhere. Work out whether the restriction is inside or further down the waste system.

Blocked toilet help across Croydon

We help with blocked toilets in Croydon houses, flats and rental properties. A flat with one toilet can become inconvenient very quickly, while older converted houses can have more complicated waste runs and previous alterations.

In many homes the cause is straightforward: wipes, too much paper, a toilet freshener dropped into the pan or a weak flush. If it keeps happening, the reason needs checking rather than simply plunging it again.

For wider toilet, waste-pipe and household plumbing work, see our Plumbers Croydon service.

Replacing the toilet as part of a bathroom upgrade?

Sometimes the blockage is only part of the problem. An older toilet may have a weak flush, damaged fittings, an awkward waste connection or simply be due for replacement.

If you are replacing the toilet, basin or other fixtures as part of a wider refurbishment, see our bathroom installation service in Croydon.

That page covers plumbing-led bathroom fitting, toilets, basins, showers, baths, taps, wastes and related pipework.

How we deal with toilet blocks

1. Check the obvious first

We look at the pan, water level, flush strength and whether anything has been dropped in. No need to overcomplicate it if the blockage is sitting close to the toilet bend.

2. Clear it safely

Depending on the blockage, we may use plunging, a toilet auger or another suitable method without damaging the pan.

3. Check why it happened

If the toilet keeps blocking, we check the flush, cistern and waste route. A toilet that blocks every few weeks usually has a reason.

If water is leaking from pipework around the toilet rather than simply sitting in the pan, see our leaking pipe repairs Croydon page.

One blocked toilet or a wider waste problem?

If only one toilet is affected, the problem may sit in the pan, toilet connector or nearby waste pipe. If several fixtures start gurgling or draining slowly at the same time, the restriction may be further down the waste system.

Tell us what else is happening when you call. That helps separate a straightforward toilet blockage from a wider drainage problem.

Useful details to tell us

  • Whether the bowl rises immediately after flushing.
  • Whether the water eventually drops on its own.
  • Whether another sink, bath or shower is draining slowly.
  • Whether wipes, an object or toilet freshener may have gone into the pan.
  • Whether strong unblocker chemicals have already been used.

Clear advice, not scare tactics

A blocked toilet feels urgent because it affects the house straight away. Still, not every blockage is a major job. If it is simple, we will say that.

If the toilet needs more work, we explain why before going ahead. The aim is to fix the immediate problem and, where possible, stop the same blockage coming straight back.

MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD provides practical plumbing help across Croydon, including blocked toilets, leaks, pipework problems and other household plumbing issues.

Blocked toilet FAQs

How do I unblock a toilet?

Stop flushing first and let the water settle. Use a proper toilet plunger with a good seal around the outlet. If it still will not clear, a toilet auger or plumber may be needed.

What is the best way to unblock a toilet?

Do not rush it. Stop flushing, let the water level drop, use a proper plunger and only use a toilet auger if you can do so safely. If the toilet keeps blocking again, get the cause checked.

Can I use toilet unblocker liquid?

It may help with some light organic build-up, but it will not clear wipes, solid objects or every deeper blockage. Strong chemicals can also make the job less safe if someone needs to work on the toilet afterwards.

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

Repeated blockages can be caused by wipes, too much paper, weak flushing, scale, poor toilet installation, older waste pipework or a restriction further down the run.

Is a blocked toilet always an emergency?

No. A simple blockage that is contained in the pan is different from a toilet that is overflowing, leaking or backing waste into the property. If water or waste is escaping, treat it more urgently.

Do you cover blocked toilets in Croydon flats and rented properties?

Yes. MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD helps with blocked toilets in Croydon flats, houses, conversions and rental properties. If the toilet is boxed in or access is awkward, let us know before arrival.
