Boiler Reset Button Not Working in London?
Pressed reset and the boiler still will not fire? That usually means the fault is still there
If your boiler reset button is not working, the button is usually not the real problem. Most boilers lock out because they have seen a fault. Pressing reset only tells the boiler to try again.
That is why people end up stuck in a reset loop. The boiler resets, tries to start, fails the same safety check again, then drops straight back into lockout mode.
We see this a lot around Croydon, Thornton Heath and Norbury, especially on cold mornings. Someone presses reset, the boiler clicks, maybe hums, maybe tries to light for a few seconds, then gives up and drops back into fault mode.
Could be pressure. Could be ignition. Could be the fan, pump, PCB, gas valve or a condensate pipe that has blocked or frozen outside. Sometimes it is simple. Sometimes it is not. We also see boilers locking out because of high boiler pressure faults.
MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD helps with boiler lockouts, failed resets and emergency boiler faults across Croydon, Thornton Heath, Addiscombe, Norbury, South Croydon, West Croydon, Selhurst and East Croydon. We have a 5.0 Google rating from 60 reviews.

Why The Boiler Reset Button Is Not Fixing It
A reset button is not really a repair button. It is more like giving the boiler one more chance after it has shut itself down.
If the boiler still sees the same problem, it will not carry on running just because the button was pressed. It will try, fail, and lock out again.
That is why pressing reset three or four times usually changes nothing. Sometimes it makes people think the button has failed, when really the boiler is refusing to run for safety.
The burner might not be lighting. The fan might not be proving airflow. The pump might not be moving water properly. Pressure may be too low. On colder days, a condensate pipe outside can block or freeze, especially on awkward pipe runs down the side of a wall.
In older homes around Thornton Heath, Norbury and West Croydon, the cause is often boring but annoying. Missed servicing. Sludge in the heating system. A tired pump. A boiler hidden away in a cupboard where nobody has looked at the pressure gauge for months.
If the fault has been building up slowly, our proper boiler servicing checks explain the sort of things that should be looked at before small issues turn into full lockouts.
Common Reasons A Boiler Will Not Reset
| What You Notice | What It Can Point To |
|---|---|
| Reset flashes, then boiler locks out again | Ignition issue, electrode fault, flame detection problem, gas valve issue or PCB signal fault. |
| Boiler resets briefly then locks out again | The boiler has attempted another startup sequence but failed the same safety or operating check again. |
| Nothing happens when reset is pressed | Electrical fault, PCB issue, blown fuse, faulty controls or a boiler stuck in safety lockout. |
| Reset works for a few minutes only | The boiler has tried again, but the original fault has not gone away. |
What A Boiler Reset Loop Usually Looks Like
A common one is a boiler in a kitchen cupboard near East Croydon. Customer has already pressed reset a few times. The boiler makes a small noise, thinks about firing, then drops back into fault mode.
From their side, it feels like nothing is happening. From the boiler’s side, it has tried and failed the same safety check again.
Sometimes the pressure is too low. Sometimes the condensate pipe has blocked outside. Other times the boiler attempts ignition, fails a safety check, then immediately drops back into lockout again.
An engineer should not just stand there pressing reset again. They should be listening for the fan, checking pressure, reading the fault code, watching the ignition sequence and deciding whether it is safe to keep trying.
No drama. Just proper fault-finding before parts get changed.
Do Not Keep Forcing It
If the boiler keeps locking out, repeated resets are not the answer. The lockout is there because the boiler has seen something it does not like.
Look For Simple Clues
Check the pressure gauge, thermostat batteries, fused spur and any visible fault code. Leave the boiler casing alone and do not touch gas-side parts.
Know When It Is Urgent
No heating, no hot water, leaking, banging, burning smells or an instant lockout after reset all need proper attention.
A Realistic Reset Fault Example
One type of job we see in South London is a boiler that resets, runs for half a minute, then gives up again.
The homeowner thinks the reset button is faulty because the boiler keeps doing the same thing. Fair enough. It looks that way from the outside.
But when it is checked properly, the button has usually done its job. The boiler has tried to start, found the same issue, then shut itself down again.
The actual cause might be a blocked condensate pipe, ignition parts not proving flame, pressure problems, flame detection faults, or something electrical stopping the boiler sequence from completing.
If you are in Croydon, Thornton Heath, Addiscombe or nearby and your boiler will not reset tonight, call 0203 576 6769. We’ll help you work out whether it sounds like a simple check or a repair visit.
No Guesswork
We check the symptoms, pressure, controls, fault code, ignition sequence, fan behaviour, condensate route and heating circulation before recommending a fix.
Straight Advice
If it is something small, we will say so. If it is more serious than a reset or service, we explain why before work starts.
Local Experience
Gas Safe Registered — ID 662170. We work on Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi boilers across Croydon and South London.
What Happens Next
The repair cost depends on what the boiler is actually doing. A failed reset can be pressure-related, ignition-related, electrical, circulation-based or caused by a blocked condensate route.
We do not invent a price before diagnosis. You get the fault explained first, then a clear quote before any repair work is carried out.
What Customers Have Said
“Boiler would not reset and we had no heating. MPS explained the likely issue, came out and got it sorted without making it confusing.”
— Sarah, Croydon“The reset button kept flashing and the boiler kept cutting out. They checked it properly and told us exactly what was wrong.”
— Mark, Thornton Heath“Good honest service. No pushy sales talk, just a proper diagnosis and repair on the same day.”
— Priya, AddiscombeBoiler Still Not Resetting?
If you are in Croydon, East Croydon, Selhurst, Norbury, Thornton Heath or nearby and the boiler is stuck in lockout, we can diagnose the fault and explain what needs doing.
When you call, tell us the boiler brand, any fault code, what happens when you press reset, and whether you have heating or hot water.
Boiler Reset Button Not Working FAQs
Why is my boiler reset button not working?
Usually because the boiler can still see the original fault. The button may be fine, but the boiler will not restart if pressure, ignition, fan, pump, PCB, gas valve or condensate problems are still active.
Is it safe to keep pressing the boiler reset button?
No, not repeatedly. One reset after a minor issue may be fine. If the boiler keeps locking out, stop forcing it and get the fault checked.
Can low pressure stop a boiler from resetting?
Yes. If the pressure is too low, many boilers will refuse to fire. The gauge is often around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, but if it keeps dropping, there may be a leak or another pressure issue.
Why does my boiler reset then go back into lockout?
That usually means the boiler attempted another startup sequence but immediately detected the same fault again. Ignition faults, pressure issues, flame detection problems and condensate blockages are all common causes.
Do I need an emergency boiler repair?
If you have no heating or hot water, the boiler will not reset, or it locks out straight away, a repair check is sensible. In winter, it is even more important if there are children, elderly people or vulnerable people in the property.
