Boiler Not Turning On in Croydon?
A simple checklist for dead displays, no power, no ignition and boilers that will not fire up
If your boiler is not turning on, the cause can be simple or it can need a proper repair. Sometimes it is a dead display, a switched-off fused spur, low pressure, a thermostat issue, an error code, or a frozen condensate pipe in winter.
In Croydon and South London, we see this a lot on cold mornings, especially where the white plastic condensate pipe runs outside and freezes. Other times, the boiler still has power but refuses to ignite because another fault has been building up in the background.
MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD helps homeowners across Croydon, Thornton Heath, Addiscombe, Norbury, South Croydon, West Croydon, Selhurst and East Croydon with boilers not firing up, boilers not switching on, and heating faults. Gas Safe Registered — ID 662170, with a 5.0 Google rating from 60 reviews.
If your boiler has no power, the display is blank, or it will not fire when you ask for heating or hot water, call 0203 576 6769 and we’ll talk through the safest checks first.
First, Work Out Whether The Boiler Is Dead Or Just Not Firing
There is a big difference between a boiler that has no power at all and a boiler that has power but refuses to fire. A dead display usually points you toward electrics, the fused spur, a tripped switch, or the boiler’s internal power supply.
A boiler with lights on, an error code, or a flashing symbol is different. That usually means the appliance still has power, but something is preventing safe ignition or startup. Low pressure, ignition problems, frozen condensate pipes, gas supply issues, overheating, fan faults, or sensor faults can all stop the boiler firing.
In older houses around Thornton Heath, Norbury and Selhurst, we also see boilers tucked into awkward cupboards where the fused spur is easy to knock off without realising. In flats near East Croydon, prepayment meter issues and external condensate pipes can also catch people out.
If the boiler has been overdue a check or has shown smaller symptoms first, a proper boiler service and safety inspection can help catch faults before they turn into a full no-heat situation.
Boiler not turning on checklist
| What to check | What it may tell you |
|---|---|
| Dead display | If there are no lights, no screen and no sound, check the fused spur, switches, consumer unit and whether other appliances have power. |
| Thermostat batteries | A wireless thermostat with dead batteries may not call for heat, so the boiler sits there doing nothing even though it still has power. |
| Pressure gauge | If pressure is too low, many boilers will not fire. A pressure issue may also link to leaks, PRV discharge or repeated pressure loss. |
| Error code | Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi boilers usually show fault codes that point toward ignition, pressure, fan, sensor or condensate faults. |
| Frozen condensate pipe | In winter, an outside white plastic pipe can freeze and stop the boiler from running properly, often causing gurgling, lockout or failed ignition. |
| Gas supply or meter | If the gas supply is off, the prepayment meter has no credit, or the meter needs resetting, the boiler may not ignite. |
When The Boiler Has Power But Still Will Not Fire
If the display is on but the boiler will not fire, the problem is different from a dead boiler. At that point, the appliance has power, but something is stopping it from starting safely.
Low pressure, a thermostat that is not calling for heat, a frozen condensate pipe, an ignition fault, gas supply issue, fan fault or sensor problem can all stop the boiler firing even when the screen still lights up.
An engineer would normally ask what the display shows, whether the boiler reacts when heating is requested, whether hot water works, what the pressure reads, and whether anything changed before it stopped firing.
Do not remove the boiler casing or try to bypass safety controls. If the boiler has power but refuses to start, it needs proper fault diagnosis.
No Power
If the boiler has no display, no lights and no signs of life, check the fused spur, wall switch and consumer unit first. If power is present but the boiler stays dead, it needs proper diagnosis.
Lockout
If the display is on but the boiler is not firing up, look for an error code or reset symbol. Lockouts can be caused by pressure, ignition, condensate, overheating or circulation faults.
Thermostat Or Controls
Sometimes the boiler is fine but the thermostat is not calling for heat. Dead batteries, wrong settings, timer issues or poor wireless signal can make it look like the boiler is not switching on.
A common winter call in Croydon
Someone wakes up on a cold morning, the house is freezing, and the boiler will not turn on properly. The display is showing a fault code, the heating will not start, and the customer has already pressed reset three or four times.
Quite often, the clue is outside. A white plastic condensate pipe runs along an external wall, freezes overnight, and the boiler shuts itself down. Other times, the pressure has dropped because of a small leak, or the boiler has been making noises for weeks before finally locking out.
If you are in Croydon, East Croydon, Addiscombe, Thornton Heath or near London Road and the boiler will not fire, call 0203 576 6769. We will ask what the display shows, whether there is power, what the pressure reads, and whether anything happened before it stopped.
No Guesswork
We check power, controls, thermostat demand, pressure, fault codes, gas supply, condensate issues, ignition behaviour and visible signs before recommending any repair.
Straight Advice
If it is a simple switch, thermostat battery or meter issue, we will say so. If it is a boiler fault, we explain what is likely happening before work starts.
Local Experience
MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD works on Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi boilers across Croydon, Norbury, Selhurst, Thornton Heath and South Croydon. Gas Safe Registered — ID 662170.
What happens when your boiler will not turn on?
Boiler fault pricing depends on what is stopping it from firing. A thermostat issue, low pressure fault, frozen condensate pipe, ignition fault, PCB problem or gas-side fault all need different checks.
We diagnose the cause, explain what we have found, and give clear advice before carrying out repair work. No rushed checks. No guessing. No repeated resets without knowing why the boiler is locking out.
What Customers Have Said
“Great work! Really quick response and turnaround to identify and fix the problem.”
— Michael Arko-Adjei“Our boiler broke down and we needed a plumber urgently. He quoted fair prices and constantly kept us updated.”
— Jo Kay“He talked us through what was happening, why and how long it would take. He then delivered on time.”
— Ellis Cain-JonesBoiler Won’t Turn On Or Fire Up?
If your boiler has no power, a blank display, will not fire, or shows a fault code you do not recognise, do not start guessing or pressing buttons over and over.
Call MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD and we will ask what the display shows, whether the pressure gauge is low, whether the thermostat is calling for heat, and whether there are signs of leaks, noises or frozen pipework.
Boiler Not Turning On FAQs
Why is my boiler not turning on?
A boiler not turning on can be caused by no power, a switched-off fused spur, thermostat problems, low pressure, an error code, frozen condensate pipe, gas supply issue, or an internal boiler fault.
Why does my boiler have no power?
If your boiler has no display or lights, check the wall switch, fused spur, consumer unit and whether other appliances have power. If the power supply is present but the boiler stays dead, it needs an engineer to diagnose safely.
Why is my boiler not firing up even though the display is on?
If the display is on but the boiler still will not fire, the issue is usually preventing ignition or startup. Common causes include low pressure, frozen condensate pipes, gas supply problems, ignition faults, fan faults or sensor issues.
Should I keep pressing the reset button?
No. One reset after checking the boiler manual may be fine, but repeated resets are not sensible. If the boiler keeps locking out, it is shutting down for a reason and should be checked properly.
Can a frozen condensate pipe stop my boiler turning on?
Yes. In winter, the white plastic condensate pipe can freeze if it runs outside. This can cause the boiler to lock out, gurgle, or fail to fire until the blockage is safely cleared.
