Boiler Keeps Switching Off in Croydon?
Fires up, cuts out, locks out… then does the same thing again?
A boiler that keeps switching off gets annoying very quickly.
It starts. Stops. Starts again. Sometimes it runs for five minutes. Other times it fires for a few seconds, makes a little noise, then gives up.
Most of the time, it is not random. The boiler is usually shutting itself down because something in the system does not look right. Low pressure, poor circulation, overheating, flame problems, a blocked condensate pipe, tired controls — any one of those can make it stop.
We see this around Croydon a lot. Older systems in Thornton Heath. Sludged-up radiators in Norbury. Pressure dropping in East Croydon flats. West Croydon boilers that have been reset so many times the customer is already fed up before they call.
MPS Heating & Plumbing LTD helps with boilers cutting out, short cycling, locking out and failing to stay on across Croydon, Thornton Heath, Addiscombe, Norbury, South Croydon, West Croydon, Selhurst and East Croydon. We have a 5.0 Google rating from 60 reviews.
If your boiler keeps cutting out tonight, call 0203 576 6769. We’ll ask what it is doing, when it stops, and whether there is an error code before sending you the wrong way.
Boiler Short Cycling In Croydon: What It Usually Means When It Starts Then Stops
A boiler that turns on and then shuts itself off is not always completely broken.
Sometimes it is actually protecting itself.
The awkward part is working out why. Low pressure can do it. So can overheating, poor circulation, a weak pump, sludge, air in the system, a blocked condensate pipe, thermostat problems, flame sensing faults or PCB issues.
This is often called boiler short cycling. In plain English, the boiler fires, reaches a problem point too quickly, then shuts itself down instead of running steadily. It might be overheating, struggling to move heat through the system, losing pressure, or being stopped by a control or sensor fault.
In flats near East Croydon, pressure loss is a common one. Around Thornton Heath, Norbury and Selhurst, older pipework and dirty system water crop up a lot. Sometimes the pump is still running, but not moving heat away properly. The boiler gets hot too quickly and stops itself.
If this started after missed checks or poor maintenance, have a look at our boiler servicing and safety checks. But if the boiler is already locking out again and again, it needs diagnosis first, not just a routine service.
Does It Stop Straight Away Or After A Few Minutes?
| What You Notice | What It May Point To |
|---|---|
| Boiler fires up then cuts out after a few seconds | Ignition, flame sensor, gas valve, electrode or PCB faults are possible. These are not DIY checks. |
| Boiler runs for five to ten minutes then shuts off | Often overheating, poor circulation, sludge, airlocks, a weak pump or a blocked heat exchanger. |
| Boiler keeps switching off when pressure drops | The system may have a leak, pressure relief valve issue, expansion vessel fault or radiator valve seepage. |
| Boiler cuts out more in freezing weather | A frozen or blocked condensate pipe can stop the boiler draining properly, especially where the white plastic pipe runs outside. |
| Boiler comes on, radiators stay cold, then it stops | The pump may not be circulating water properly, or sludge and air may be stopping heat moving round the system. |
Safe Checks Before You Call
Start with the pressure gauge. Check it when the boiler is cold. A lot of boilers sit around 1 to 1.5 bar cold, although it depends on the model.
If the gauge is near zero, the boiler may keep locking out because there is not enough water pressure in the system. Topping it up might get it going for a while. If it drops again, the problem has not gone away.
Check the thermostat batteries. Check the programmer has not been changed by mistake. It happens more than people admit. In winter, look outside for a frozen condensate pipe if the boiler stopped during a cold snap. Gurgling before lockout can be a clue.
Resetting once is usually fine. Resetting it again and again is not a repair.
Do not remove the boiler casing. Burner, electrodes, fan, gas valve, flue, combustion chamber and internal seals are Gas Safe work.
Low Pressure
If the pressure keeps dropping, topping it up may only hide the real fault. Small leaks, radiator valves, pressure relief valves and expansion vessel problems are all common.
Pump Or Sludge Problems
A common sign is the boiler getting hot quickly while the radiators stay lukewarm. Older South London systems can build up sludge, especially where radiators have not been flushed or balanced for years.
Ignition Or Flame Faults
If the boiler lights, makes a small whoosh, then cuts out almost straight away, it may be struggling to prove the flame safely. That needs proper gas-side diagnosis.
A Typical Croydon Callout
One we see quite often is a terraced house near Thornton Heath where the boiler comes on in the morning, runs for a few minutes, then cuts out.
By that point, the customer has usually topped the pressure up a few times. Fair enough. It gets the heating going for a bit. Then the same fault comes back.
Sometimes pressure is part of it, but not the whole story. Dirty system water, a tired pump, heat not moving round the radiators properly — that can all make the boiler overheat and shut itself down because it cannot shift the heat away fast enough.
If you are in Croydon, Norbury, Addiscombe or South Croydon and the boiler keeps doing this, call 0203 576 6769. We’ll ask what the boiler does before sending you toward the wrong fix.
No Guesswork
We look at the pattern first. Pressure, error code, heating demand, pump activity, hot water behaviour, thermostat response and whether the boiler is overheating or locking out.
Straight Advice
If it is a small fix, we’ll say so. If it is more than a service, we’ll explain why. No vague “could be anything” answer when the boiler is already giving clues.

Boiler Still Cutting Out?
If your boiler keeps switching off in Croydon, Thornton Heath, Norbury, Addiscombe, South Croydon, West Croydon, Selhurst or East Croydon, get it checked before repeated lockouts turn into a full breakdown.
When you call, we’ll ask what the boiler does, how quickly it cuts out, whether the pressure drops, and whether you have an error code showing.

If the boiler keeps locking out after the heating has been running for a while, overheating, circulation issues or high boiler pressure may be involved. In older Croydon systems, sludge and poor circulation are more common than people think.
What Customers Have Said
“The boiler kept cutting out every morning. MPS explained what was happening clearly and got it sorted without making it complicated.”
— Croydon customer“Really helpful. They checked the boiler properly, found the pressure issue and told us what needed doing before starting any work.”
— Thornton Heath customer“Our heating would come on then stop after a few minutes. They found the circulation problem and gave honest advice.”
— Addiscombe customerBoiler Keeps Switching Off FAQs
Why does my boiler keep switching off but then come back on?
This is often short cycling. The boiler may be reaching temperature too quickly, losing pressure, overheating, struggling with circulation, or being interrupted by a thermostat or sensor fault.
Can low pressure cause a boiler to shut off?
Yes. If the pressure drops too low, many boilers lock out to protect themselves. If you keep topping it up and it drops again, look for a leak, pressure relief valve issue or expansion vessel fault.
Why does my boiler fire up for a few seconds then stop?
If it fires briefly then stops, the timing matters. A boiler that stops almost instantly may be failing an ignition or flame check, while one that runs for a few minutes then cuts out may be overheating, struggling with circulation, or shutting down because heat is not moving away from the boiler properly. Gas-side checks still need a Gas Safe engineer.
Is it dangerous if my boiler keeps cutting out?
It can be. Sometimes it is pressure or controls. Other times repeated lockouts point to overheating, combustion problems or unsafe operation. If you smell gas, notice burning smells, hear loud banging, or your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, stop using the boiler and get urgent help.
Can I keep resetting my boiler?
Reset it once if the manual says it is safe to do so. If it keeps locking out, stop. Repeated resets can hide the real fault and sometimes make the problem worse.
Why does my boiler switch off more at night?
Night faults are often linked to colder temperatures, higher heating demand, pressure dropping as the system cools, thermostat schedules, or condensate pipes freezing in winter.
